Jazz and Leadership lectures and performances in Finland and the Nordic countries

Jari Perkiömäki

I am Jari Perkiömäki, awarded jazz saxophonist and composer. I have had a long career as a musician and educator and have worked also as the rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki.

After my doctoral degree (2002), which studied improvisation, I have developed a workshop-style training suitable for organizations and the business world, based on the collaboration and teamwork in a jazz band. In the training I always have a band of skilled professional musicians with me.

So as part of my career in music, I have been involved in numerous corporate events where jazz music is used to learn about smooth management and teamwork. Many large Finnish and international companies, such as KONE, Wärtsilä and Yleisradio, have bravely visited my workshops.

”Both in the art world and in other fields, similar principles apply to teamwork. Everyone should be seen and heard.

Jazz and Leadership – workshops for teams

The aim of the workshop-style events is to open up methods of orchestra management for companies, which can be applied to the teamwork and management of almost any organization. My trainings are not only lectures, rather an invitation to inspiring dialogue where we also make art and have fun together. The workshops do not offer direct answers, but insights into management and the dynamics of working groups.
Both in the art world and in other fields, similar principles apply to teamwork. Everyone should be seen and heard. In addition, the group must learn to work flexibly. Business people are often surprised by how the members of the orchestra communicate with each other during a musical performance. These methods are certainly not cheap tricks, which you would directly apply to the everyday life of companies, but the observations can offer a lot of food for thought and insights into your own operations.

Managing creativity

Jazz and Management events are suitable for organizations and companies that want to develop their management methods and be better at collaborative creative process. The question easily arises, is it possible to improvise in everyday life in all fields? It is important to understand the limits within each field and to include creativity with methods suitable for the field.

Jazz and Management workshops are always customized for each company. Any specific or current theme for the company can be taken into account in the content of the workshop.
